Bayelsa 2016 guber poll: Group vows to canvass support for visionary candidate

NEDU WOSU, Yenagoa

Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Bayelsa state, a non-governmental organization based in the state has vowed to mobilize supporters and throw its weight behind any visionary leader who would take the state to a greater height.

The group, under the aegis of the Bayelsa Democracy and Development Initiative called on all workers, students, professionals, politicians and the entire civil society in the state to join the struggle and enthrone social justice and good governance instead of being onlookers.

In a statement issued, Monday, in Yenagoa by its secretary Dr. Ekiyor Welson, the group, after its maiden meeting, decried a situation where residents and indigenes of the state exhibit a nonchalant attitude towards the social realities in the state.

The statement said delegates at the meeting bemoaned a situation where the political class in the state has not done enough to address the social and economic predicaments being faced by people including environmental challenges such as perennial flooding.

The statement also recalled that 16 years of democratic governance in the state has not impacted positively on the people as issues of poverty, infrastructure deficit and economic failures such as acute unemployment have remained high and prevalent in the face of increased treasury.

The group which is an affiliate of the Rawls Centre for Philosophy said its members have vowed to work with visionary leaders and people of like minds to achieve the dream of the founding fathers of the state.

Chairman of the group, Comrade Oyeinfie Jonjon maintained that its vision is to work constantly for the enthronement of good governance and social justice in Bayelsa, saying they must continue to engage in the mobilization of civil society in the state through all means necessary and available to achieve their vision.
