Buhari gives Ministers April 24 deadline to handover `Status Reports;’ Assures Bill Gates that he’ll not fail Nigerians

President Buhari presides over Federal Executive Council (FEC) in State House on 17th April 2019

In a move that confirmed speculations of an imminent cabinet shake-up, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked for comprehensive “status reports on policies, programmes and projects” from cabinet members on their respective ministries, departments and agencies as his first term tenure winds down.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

This is as President Buhari last night commended one of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates for his consistent and generous support to public causes around the globe, and specifically for supporting the eradication of polio and HIV diseases in Africa and Nigeria in particular.

The statement on status reports from cabinet members said the President had given the ministers April 24 as deadline for the submission of the reports to the Presidential Audit Committee in the office of the Vice President.

“A circular to this effect issued by Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, also requested members of the Federal Executive Council to “ensure that all outstanding memoranda they intend to present to the Federal Executive Council are submitted to the Cabinet Affairs Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, not later than Tuesday, 30th April, 2019,’’ it added.

It also quoted the circular as informing members that the “9th and 10th meetings of the Council have been rescheduled to Thursday, 25th April and Thursday, 2nd May, 2019 respectively” in view of the Easter break and May Day celebrations.

Mr. Bill Gates, speaking in a telephone call to congratulate President Buhari on his election victory, winning a second four-year term of office, according to a statement by Garba Shehu,  said he was happy to be associated with the President and restated his commitment to the success of the administration as well as the progress, prosperity and well-being of Nigeria. He expressed willingness to do more for the country.

President Buhari in the conversation, reiterated his opinion that Mr Gates’ wealth has benefited Nigeria’s development, and expressed appreciation for the call.

“I am very happy the way your projects have touched the life of the average Nigerian. The people of this country have given their verdict. This verdict says we have to work hard to meet their expectations. God willing, we will not fail, ” the President said.
