Former President Goodluck Jonathan may be invited soon by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in connection with investigations into the $2.1billion arms scandal involving the immediate past National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki.
The hint was given by the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu in Lagos Monday at an interactive session with members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, and some on air personalities.
Mr. Magu, in answer to a question as to why the former President had not been invited for questioning since Col. Dasuki had alleged that he disbursed the funds following the instructions of Dr. Jonathan, stressed that whoever needs to be invited to throw light on any aspect of the investigation would be invited, pointing out, however, that memos he had seen so far showed that the funds were not disbursed for what they were approved for.
Revelations so far have shown that much of the money meant for the purchase of arms to battle the Boko Haram insurgents were given out to political party and media chiefs to be used for the 2015 presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Besides Dasuki, former ministers, former governors, a media mogul, serving and retired military personnel and have either been detained or linked to the scandal which has seen the opposition PDP alleging a witch-hunt targeted at its leaders.
Earlier in his opening remarks at the event, Magu had assured that the EFCC under his watch “shall be vigilant as the eagle which is our symbol. No one, I repeat, NO ONE, no matter how highly placed, shall be spared if he or she infringes on the laws of the land.”
He also insisted that the anti-graft agency is neither being tele-guided or being used for purposes of a witch-hunt, noting that it is “only those who have soiled their hands that have reasons to be apprehensive.”
The EFCC boss said that the agency presently enjoys the strong support of the three arms of government – the executive, the legislature and the judiciary, and appealed for the support of the media, especially, he said, as “the forces which we are battling are powerful and some of them may want to use all platforms of the media to distract and derail us.”
He stressed that the times call for vigilance by all, especially the media, which, he noted, has the critical role of helping to re-orientate the populace to embrace positive values.
