CAF wades into Banjul airport incident involving Gabonese team

Abuja, Nov. 16, 2020

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday called an emergency  video conference meeting with representatives of the Gabonese and Gambian football federations.

The essence of the meeting was to rule on the incident which occurred on Sunday at the Banjul airport in The Gambia.

Gabon’s national team had arrived for a return leg game against The Gambia in the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

But the team was held up for several hours before being allowed to enter the Gambian territory.

“During the call, the Secretary General of CAF clearly deplored this unfortunate situation before informing the two parties of his decision to inform the disciplinary commission.

”This is in order to examine the causes of this incident, so as to establish the responsibilities and apply the consequent sanctions.

“The Secretary General of CAF welcomed the state of mind of the two parties, who held exchanges which were respectful and courteous,” Alexandre Siewe, CAF Communication Director, said in a statement on Monday.
