Celebrating the 2019 Awka Art Exhibition

The ancient town of Awka, capital city of Anambra State, comes into international limelight as the Zimife Harris-Eze Foundation in collaboration with The Awka Museum Project celebrates its maiden Art Exhibition, “Awka Art Exhibition 2019” coming up between Friday, December 20 and Sunday, December 22 2019 at 231 Zik Avenue in Umudioka Awka.

The objective of the exposition, according to the organizers, is to awaken the world to the reality that Igbo Language and elements of the Culture may soon suffer some extinction. In their view, Igbo festivals have also suffered neglect.  The Awka Art Exhibition promoters therefore aim to create awareness through the different forms of art.

The Awka Art Exhibition aims to be a multi-disciplinary medium of conveying the message.  It aims to be an Annual event.

It will be formally opened on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 1pm.  Saturday activities will start at 10 am.  The third and last day of the exhibition will be dedicated solely to Awka Culture, and activities will start at 1pm

The main features at the event will be Visual Artists, Textile Artists, Ceramists, Sculptors, Local carvers and Blacksmiths

There will be a Pre-Exhibition Cocktail at the 231 Zik Avenue venue on Thursday, December 19, starting at 7pm.

The programs for each day are as follows: Day 1 – Friday, December 20, from 1pm – Speeches, Cultural Performances, and Viewing and sale of works of the various artistes exhibiting.

Day 2, that is,  Saturday December 21, from 9am, will showcase Outside Art Workshop for the kids, Adult Task Competition, Face Painting, Cultural Performances, Viewing and Sales.

On Day 3, to wit, the Grand Finale, Sunday, December 21, 1 pm, various aspects of life in Awka – past and present – will be on display at the Museum. There will be excerpts from video interviews of selected Awka Citizens on various aspects of Awka culture and customs. There will also be a display of various books written on Awka, Awka Institutions and Awka History. Some photographs of people and places in Awka will also be on display.

Then there will be the grand closure and adjournment of Exhibition to a date in December 2020.

The event will be rounded off with a Carol Night.
