Chelsea promotes Nigerian-born midfielder Ashanti Akpan to first team

Ashanti Akpan, a Super Falcons-eligible midfielder, has received a promotion to the Chelsea Ladies’ first team, marking a significant milestone in her young career. The talented midfielder participated in Chelsea’s final training session on Tuesday ahead of their UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against Ajax.

Currently representing England at the U19 level, Akpan has caught the eye of Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, who has deemed her ready for first-team duties. There is speculation that Akpan could be included in the matchday squad for Wednesday’s encounter against Ajax, following Chelsea’s convincing 3-0 victory in the first leg.

Having been registered on Chelsea’s List B for the Champions League, Akpan is poised to make her mark on the European stage, potentially wearing the number 36 jersey for the Blues.

Born to a Nigerian father and a Polish mother, Akpan holds eligibility to represent any of the three countries at the senior level, presenting her with exciting prospects for her international career.

At just 18 years old, Akpan’s promotion underscores Chelsea’s belief in her talent and potential. The midfielder signed a new contract with Chelsea last December, further solidifying her commitment to the club and highlighting her importance to their future plans.
