Senator Okpozo of defunct Bendel dies in Benin

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Francis Okpozo is dead.

Senator Okpozo died in Benin City on Monday night at a private hospital in Benin City, capital of Edo state after a brief illness.

Okpozo, who died at the age of 81, was one-time Deputy Speaker of the defunct Bendel State House of Assembly under the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and was elected to the Senate on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform.

Family sources who broke the news said his eldest son was on his way to his Benin City residence.

Speaking to journalists at his father’s residence off Ekenhuan road, Benin City, eldest son of the deceased, Edgar Okpozo expressed surprise at the death of his father, saying though the man was aged, he still feels his father should have stayed much longer.

Sympathisers thronged the residence of the deceased to console the widow, Mrs Anna Okpozo. Among them were a former Commissioner for Health in Delta state, Dr Alex Ideh.

The late Senator, before his death, was a deputy speaker in the defunct Bendel state and was reputed to be the one who presided over the Bill establishing the then Bendel University, Ekpoma, now Ambrose Alli University as well as then Bendel State Polytechnic, Ozoro, now Ozoro Polytechnic, Delta state.

Okpozo, a consummate politician was a one-time chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta state.
