Doyin Okupe resigns to pursue appeal of conviction

Dr. Doyin Okupe

Director General of the of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign, Dr Doyin Okupe has resigned his position to pursue his appeal of his conviction by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court Abuja for accepting money above the threshold as prescribed by the Money Laundering Act during his tenure as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Okupe’s letter of resignation, addressed to the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, said he had invested too much in the campaign to allow his personal travails turn into an encumbrance, stressing that he took the decision to resign to enable him to pursue his appeal.

Mr. Obi had, while reacting to Okupe’s conviction said that nothing will stop his march to the Presidency, insisting that he will not let anything ‘they’ will do to people around him to demoralise or distract him. He also made reference to the grounding of his presidential campaign aircraft, which many say is an effort to frustrate his campaign that has gained traction across the country.

Okupe’s resignation, a commentator said, is an example of the moral high ground that Obi and his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed are presenting to Nigerians as the count down to the 2023 general elections continues.
