A lecture in memory of renowned civil rights crusader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will hold today Wednesday,  January 26, 2022.

The hybrid program (in-person and virtual), which is being sponsored by the Africana Institute and the Student Life & Activities Office of Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey,  United States of America (USA) will hold at the Smith Hall of Essex County College from 10: 00am.

The Keynote Address of the Memorial lecture,  titled “Rolling Us Back: Voting Rights Retrospective,” will be delivered by Dr. Akil Kokayi Khalfani, the Director of the Africana Institute and Director of Global Education and Experiences at Essex County College.

An Associate Professor of Sociology at Essex County College,  Dr. Khalfani has been the Host and Executive Director of The Pulse TV show for 10 years and has served as the Chair of the Social Justice Council.

A political activist of note, Dr. Khalfani has been recognized for his community service work by the United States Congress,  the California and New  York State Senates, the New Jersey and New York State Assemblies, and several munipalities in the North East.

Dr. Khalfani earned Ph. D and Master’s degrees in Sociology from the University of ennsylvania, from which he also earned a Graduate Certificate in African Studies. While living in South Africa, he studied at the University of Pretoria.

The program is open to the publicbut proof of COVID vaccination or recent negative COVID test is required to attend.
