The Edo State Chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to be in controversy following the purported endorsement of a preferred candidate of the governor, Adams Oshiomhole by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON)
This is also as the association has reacted to reports that it has been mandated to carry an advertorial in support of a candidate.
Secretary of the Association, Barrister Jimoh Ijegbai who described the speculations as ‘laughable,’added that “when the times comes and as critical stakeholder in the system, we have the right to decide who our preferred choice will be but before we do that,we must consider the interest of Edo people. Edo people must come first.
Ijegbai who is the Council chairman of Owan East, continued: “But for now,it is too early to start thinking that way,I can assure you that not even the Governor or other officials can tell us what to do. In any case when the time comes,we will do the needful. Nobody can coax us to do what is not right.
Some other stakeholders in the party who have expressed apprehension about talks that the state governor,Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has anointed a particular aspirant ahead of others noted that such moves will negate the principle of One man one vote
Among some aspirants who spoke on the issue said that the governor must maintain neutrality in the contest for who occupies Osadebey Avenue.
An aspirant Engr Chris Ogiemwonyi had in an interview said it will be a complete misplace of trust if the governor is found to be endorsing any candidate.
He said “when you hear things like this, many people prepare to discuss things they don’t know. Oshiomhole preached one man one vote four five years ago and we saw what happened in this state, things have changed to that philosophy, I as a person like to commend people; this guy destroyed godfatherism that in our state here before now, we have about three people deciding how things are shared but today, godfatherism buried and our prayer is that it will never rise again in Edo state so when I hear about that governor has anointed somebody, all APC is going to do is that we are going to the field, there will be an open primary, it is the people that decides. He has promised that there will be a free and fair primaries, how will anointing come into that? If he is anointing, it is the people you should blame because the only way you can exibit democracy, is through open ballot and that is what the man is preaching. I have left my base in Abuja to be here so that I can participate in the process and since I joined APC last year, I have been following process by process, I have not seen where this man has defaulted I must confess.”
