Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoroh and his Deputy, Hon Bright Osayande were Tuesday, impeached by the 16-man legislature over what they termed as ‘gross misconduct, abuse of power and financial misappropriation.’
The motion for the impeachment was said to have been moved by the Majority Leader, Foly Ogedegbe, representing Owan East constituency and seconded by member representing Esan North East, Patrick Iluobe
Meanwhile the member representing Unhumowode constituency, Hon Elizabeth Ativie emerged the new Speaker while Justine Okonobo representing Igueben Constituency was consequently endorsed as Deputy Speaker
The decision to impeach the Speaker who they equally accused of promoting tribalism, it was gathered, was not unconnected with the fragrant manner the House recently forged ahead to dissolved the tenure of the council chairmen without recourse to the executive Governor of the State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole
Oshiomhole had described the dissolution of the council chairmen’s tenure by the House as outright usurping of the power of the executive which he said was unacceptable and inappropriate
“The resolution is a usurpation of the powers of the executive. The house does not have the power to give such directives,” the governor said.
It could also be recalled that the twenty four members of the House revolted against the leadership of the Speaker recently which culminated into rowdy plenary session over alleged refusal by the State Government to buy them official vehicles which later forced the House to proceed on an indefinite vacation.
