Environment Minister disappointed with Gombe NEWMAP

Gov. Ibrahim Dankwabo, Gombe State Governor

Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibrin Thursday came down hard on the Gombe State Project Manager of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) for not living up to expectation in the execution of the project in the State.

The minister, who was in the state to mark the 2017 World Day to Combat Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought, expressed dissatisfaction with the poor handling of erosion sites in the State.

The Minister expressed the disappointment that he traveled from Gombe town to Bojude on the Gombe Kano road venue of the occasion where he was amazed by the way gully erosion has taken over the road.

He told the Project Manager that he will not fail to indict NEWMAP if pushed to the wall on discovering that nothing seems to be going on concerning the project when next he comes into the state.

According to him, the Federal Government cannot ignore the consequences of gully erosion in the state even though it is as a result of the soil situation in the State, especially the State capital.

He said, “We want to see a practical thing is being done on the project”, just as he directed that a new plan be done as quickly as possible since nothing whatsoever was executed on the project since the beginning of this year.

He decried the inability of the Project Manager to execute any project due to lack of funds, saying, the process of accessing the funds were not followed. He advised the Project Manager to work hard to access the fund saying, “Your work and subsequently all of us is service to humanity”.

He promised to continue monitoring Gombe State, adding that the Federal Government has a special intervention agenda in the North-East due to what had been happening in the region.

Earlier, the Project Manager, Bala-Dozen Nayaya, highlighted the achievements of the project in the State, including securing a comfortable accommodation, and decried poor funding of the project.
