Dr Olukayode Akinrolabu, an energy expert, has called on the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, to stabilise the grid, accelerate metering and reform gas supply to boost electricity delivery within his first 100 days in office.
Akinrolabu, a member of the science and technology education research group at Lagos State University, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said that such decisive action within his first 100 days could significantly improve electricity supply nationwide.
He said the government could tackle the sector’s liquidity crisis and end the recurring national grid collapses that continued to disrupt economic activities.
According to Akinrolabu, power sector debts could be audited, while payment mechanisms for generation companies and gas suppliers should be strengthened to restore confidence across the electricity value chain.
“The immediate priority is to stop liquidity bleed and end frequent grid collapses,” he said.
He also advocated the full deployment of grid monitoring systems to improve transparency, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce nationwide outages.
On consumer issues, Akinrolabu urged the accelerated rollout of electricity meters to eliminate estimated billing and boost public confidence in the sector.
“If these reforms are effectively implemented, Nigerians should begin to see clearer, fairer bills and fewer nationwide blackouts within a few months,” he added.
He maintained that discipline, transparency, and sustained investment remained critical to restoring the health and growth of the power sector.
NAN recalls that Tegbe, during his Senate screening on May 5, pledged to tackle the persistent challenge of national grid collapses if confirmed as substantive Minister of Power.
He identified grid stabilisation as a key target for his first 100 days in office, with plans to follow up with an expanded metering programme.
He noted that this aims at reducing estimated billing and improving service delivery across the country.
