The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology says it has plans to establish a waste management pilot plant model that will serve as an example to other States within the North-East region.
Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu stated this in Gombe Monday at the flag-off of the National Waste-To-Wealth programme using appropriate technologies for the North-East held in Gombe.
The minister disclosed that Gombe State was chosen for the pilot project because the state is blessed with abundant natural resources which include uranium, gypsum and limestone, as well as rich agricultural resources.
“When installed,” according to the Minister who was represented at the occasion by the Director of Finance and administration, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf, “the pilot plant will enable us convert our waste to valuable economic goods and services and technology as an important instrument for national rebirth, sustainable development and enduring prosperity”.
He added that if the Waste-To-Wealth programme is properly executed as planned, it will go a long way in eradicating poverty, reducing unemployment and crime through its numerous empowerment benefits such as job creation in various sectors of waste management for both women and youths and the establishment of SMEs in line with waste management.
The programme is also expected to help in improving the health status of Nigerians through a cleaner waste and pollution-free environment as well as serve as a platform to enlighten children on the adverse effects of improper waste management and the need to cultivate good waste management habits which can be passed on to future generations.
In his speech, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo said the launch of the programme could not have come at a better time than now when Government efforts are geared towards diversifying the economy as well as creating job opportunities for the teeming youths.
He noted that the North East has experienced numerous challenges arising from activities of insurgents which have adversely affected socio-economic activities in the region leading to high levels of unemployment and poverty.
Representatives of Governors of Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe and Borno states also attended the flagg-off ceremony with each Governor pledging their commitment to participate in the programme.
