The former governor of Rivers state, Sir Celestine Omehia has urged Rivers people to vote for Governor Nyesom Wike for accelerated development of the state occasioned by his use of professionals to attain set goals.
Speaking at the Inaugural summit with the theme:”The New Rivers Vision: Galvanizing Professionals for Good Governance”, organized by Rivers Professionals for Wike (RIVPROW) in Port Harcourt, the former governor said that he shared the line of thinking of the group that the secret behind Wike’s success is the employment of professional services and advice in implementing his programmes.
He stated that the main reason for the nation’s backwardness was the fact that advice and competence of professionals are not taken into account in our national development.
He condemned bogus development projects that do not have relevance in the life of Nigerians.
Sir Omehia said that the worst culprit in the management of professionals in attaining developmental goals is the federal government.
He condemned incompetence in appointments where there is a square peg in a round hole citing the cases of Power and Labour as good examples.
“One important thing is using and putting them where they will function professionally. If you don’t put a professional where he is relevant, it will not work. I give you an example. The honourable Minister of Power, Works and Housing is a professional. Yes, he knows it all as a lawyer but he is a square peg in a round hole in that ministry. He was given a position where he does not belong. He cannot deliver. We are not having regular power supply. So also is the Minister of Labour and Productivity. He is a medical professional. Labour has nothing to do with syringe. We need to utilize them where they belong. In Rivers state, we had professionals and they were allocated where they should be Dr. Peter Odili and myself managed them well. The current governor Wike is using professionals well. We can see the results”.
He said that Governor Wike stands a chance of transforming Rivers state within a short time based on the policy of recognizing the competence of professionals in their chosen areas, adding that another four year term for Wike will make Rivers state a paradise to live in.
He urged Rivers people and the residents to register for their Permanent Voters Card(PVC) to enable them decide their destiny.
He condemned the previous administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for not using professionals or being guided by their counsels in implementing most of the projects of his administration.
This, he said led to a lot of incompetences and irrelevancies of projects to the people’s life citing the case of monorail, which for now is not relevant but an elephant project.
“I owe no apology to say this. The previous administration of Rivers state has shown that there is nothing important to them as far as the state is concerned. What is important is individual interest. You can see that many projects were initiated either with the advice of professionals, which were not taken or without the advice of professionals. Look at what the Commissioner for Health said. I wish the Commissioner for Education is also here, he will also have told us whether there was need for some primary schools built when there were the existing primary schools needing renovations. Ubima where I come from is a typical example. The secondary school there was completely dead and taken over by the cult boys yet a mega secondary school; a bigger one just like the one at Tai LGA,was being built. The children in the community were going to another village for schooling while the one they are building hadn’t even taken off. This is lack of professional advice or it was not taken.Look at the monorail. There was no need for all those things. But the important thing now is Rivers state has the governor who listens to professional advice and implements the ideas of the professionals”.
