The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi has charged staff, especially those responsible for processing the drivers’ licences in the states on improved service delivery, saying that the Corps cannot afford to fail the expectations of Nigerians. He stated this Wednesday while declaring open a one day sensitisation workshop organised for Sector Heads of Drivers’ Licence Centres from the 36 states of the Federation including the FCT.
In a statement made available by Head of Media Relations and Strategy, Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Marshal said the FRSC places importance on staff capacity building in order to prepare them adequately for technical and administrative challenges in their work environment for enhancement of their productivity level, saying the Workshop was the fourth in the series of the training programmes organised for the staff since the beginning of the year. “It is gratifying to note that the workshops have impacted positively on the productivity of the staff,” he stated.
Oyeyemi stressed the importance of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme and the National Driver’s Licence as platforms for collating the data, unifying the process of acquisition of the licenses and standardising the procedures with a view to ensuring the integrity of the system. He added that in line with the peculiar federal system which Nigeria operates, a tripartite arrangement between the FRSC, the state Boards of Internal Revenue and Vehicle Inspection Officers was put in place to give the states full participation in the process leading to the issuance of the licences.
The Corps Marshal listed some of the challenges facing the scheme as non-committal attitudes of some state governments; location of the drivers’ licence centres in areas with inadequate security provision for the equipment, leading to cases of theft and disruption of production as well as parallel production of the licences. Oyeyemi urged the heads of drivers’ licence centres to improve on their relationship with members of the public, warning that cases of rudeness or abuse of public trust would not be tolerated from any centre.
“What I demand of you is improved service; making the best use of the training you have received and reciprocating the gestures of providing you with the right equipment and conducive environment to work,” he stated.
Speaking further, the Corps Marshal stated that the Workshop was organised to give the staff opportunity to appreciate the importance of the merger of the biometric data for a national database and the ongoing harmonisation of the FRSC’s data with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) as ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the Corps is up and doing to ensure that the presidential directive was expeditiously carried out in the best interest of Nigerians.
The one day Workshop with the theme, ”The Importance of National Driver’s Licence and Number Plates administration to National Security,” attracted paper presentation from carefully chosen Resource Persons, including the Director of Department of State Security (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Daura, who was represented by an Assistant Director from the Service.
Also in attendance at the Workshop were some principal officers of the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja and Zonal Commanding Officers from the Zones across the country.
