As a measure aimed at sustaining the UN-Women programme of promoting Women’s engagement in Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria, the Gombe State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare has assured that it will create a budget line in 2019 for the continuation of the activities .
The Director, Women Development of the Ministry, Fiji Yusuf who gave the assurance at a stakeholders meeting in Gombe to end the project in the state appreciated UN-Women for implementing the UNSCR 1325 in four Local Government Areas of Gombe state.
The four year project which comes to an end by the end of September, 2018 has been implemented in three States of Adamawa, Gombe and Plateau.
Mrs. Fiji said the Ministry had achieved a lot through the UN-Women programme in the state that include the review of Gender and Equal Opportunity Draft Bill by the State Ministry of Justice and corrected by the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill Committee and the Ministry of Women Affairs which was submitted to the Gombe State Executive Council.
The Director said the Ministry had developed and launched the First State Action Plan of the UNSCR 1325 which is going to serve as a guide to work on for the continuation of the programme in the state.
She revealed that 240 women are actively participating in decision making at traditional councils in the 4 local government areas adding that the UN- Women is working and fully participating in peace and conflict resolution of their communities.
She gave other achievements to include the involvement of 4,860 women that are actively part of the women peace and security structure across the 4 local government areas from the baseline of Zero and are actively involved in conflict dialogue and mediation activities.
She said there was also capacity enhancement for the Media Networks who were also actively engaged in promoting the UNSCR 1325 in their various mediums. She said they also accessed and reported mechanism for girls and women affected by Human Right abuses to support a conducive environment for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325.
The Director said the Ministry’s Staff have also been engaged in capacity building by the UN-Women in the areas of advocacy, lobby, project management, monitoring and evaluation as well as deporting.
Earlier, the Gombe State Gender Advisor for UN-Women, Mrs. Rhoda Dia said the programme was funded by European Union EU and implemented by UN-Women in collaboration with UNICEF to promote women engagement in peace development and conflict management process at all levels.
Traditional, Faith Based Organizations, Media, Security and the Civil Society Organizations were in attendance at the stakeholders meeting to end the UN-Women programme in Gombe state.
