Harry Kane stars as England beat Croatia 4-2 in World Cup opener

Harry Kane delivered a captain’s performance as England opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an exciting 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday.

The Three Lions produced an impressive attacking display to secure all three points and make a strong start to life under manager Thomas Tuchel at the tournament.

Kane led the way with two goals and was deservedly named Player of the Match. The England captain first scored from the penalty spot after being allowed to retake his initial effort before adding a powerful header from a Declan Rice set-piece delivery.

England’s attack continued to threaten throughout the match, with Jude Bellingham putting his side ahead at a crucial moment. The Real Madrid midfielder finished off a move created by Elliot Anderson to make it 3-2 after Croatia had fought back.

Noni Madueke was one of England’s most dangerous players. The winger’s pace and movement troubled Croatia’s defence all evening and he won the penalty that led to Kane’s first goal.

Marcus Rashford sealed the victory after coming off the bench in the second half. The Manchester United forward showed his finishing quality by calmly converting Bukayo Saka’s pass to score England’s fourth goal.

While England’s attack impressed, the defence showed signs of vulnerability. Croatia managed to score twice and occasionally exposed a backline featuring John Stones and Ezri Konsa, who are still building an understanding as a central defensive partnership.

Declan Rice was influential in midfield, providing an assist for Kane’s second goal and creating further opportunities from set-pieces. Elliot Anderson also earned praise for another mature display in an England shirt.

The victory puts England in a strong position in their group and will boost confidence ahead of their next World Cup fixture.
