Mrs Regina Dung, the Head Teacher of FCT School for the Blind, on Friday, stressed the need for educational support for visually impaired children to enable them to learn effectively.
Dung made the call at the Christmas Carol organised by Omalicha Ada Di Igbo Nma (OADN), an NGO, in Abuja.
She said that provision of education support for children would help them to become whatever they desired to be in life.
She added that government alone could not fund the school because it was difficult and more expensive to train visually impaired children than those who were not.
According to her, majority of the children are from poor backgrounds and it is not easy accommodating, feeding, educating and taking care of them.
She said “the school is free and there are no criteria to attend the school, as long as the person is visually impaired.
“Government is doing its best, but it is not enough as feeding the children three times daily is a difficult task.”
Dung noted that though government made efforts to provide succor for the children, more was still being required.
The President of OADN, Lillian Ogugua, urged Nigerians to always show kindness to the less privileged and physically challenged, especially during festive seasons.
Ogugua, who said that the organisation was set to support the school and orphanages, appealed to Federal Government to continue to provide for the children to ensure their well-being.
She added that “we must not wait to have the whole world before we show love to our fellow citizens; we must show love to others, no matter their tribe or religion.
“We want children to know that the society is not against them and for them to feel loved.”
A student of the school, 14 years old Faith Benjamin, said she was born blind and that she was living in total darkness until she was brought to the school.
She said “ever since I got to this school, my life has changed; I now feel like a human being; I am grateful to OADN for putting smile on our faces.”
