Premier League giants fall as United, Chelsea, Liverpool suffer defeats

It was a dramatic Saturday in the Premier League as three of the division’s biggest clubs – Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool – all fell to damaging defeats.

At the Gtech Community Stadium, Manchester United’s problems deepened with a 3-1 loss to Brentford. Igor Thiago scored twice in the first 20 minutes after poor defending from United. Benjamin Sesko pulled one back with his first goal since joining from RB Leipzig, but captain Bruno Fernandes missed a second-half penalty that could have levelled the game. Deep into stoppage time, Mathias Jensen sealed Brentford’s victory with a powerful strike. United have still not won back-to-back league games under manager Ruben Amorim.

In west London, Chelsea also collapsed to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton. The Blues had led through Enzo Fernandez’s header, but Trevoh Chalobah’s red card in the second half turned the game. Brighton substitutes Danny Welbeck and Maxim de Cuyper scored in stoppage time to complete a remarkable comeback, leaving Chelsea winless since the international break and dropping to seventh in the table.

At Selhurst Park, Liverpool’s perfect start to the season came to an end as Crystal Palace earned a famous 2-1 win. Ismaila Sarr gave Palace an early lead before substitute Federico Chiesa equalised late on for Liverpool. But Eddie Nketiah struck in the seventh minute of added time to snatch victory for Palace, lifting them to second in the table and stretching their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions.

The defeats for United, Chelsea and Liverpool marked a rare day when three Premier League giants all stumbled, shaking up the top half of the table.
