Imo gets NUC’s nod to establish university, the 143rd in the country

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted recognition to Imo State-owned Kingsley Mbadiwe University, Ogboko.

It is the 42nd state-owned varsity in Nigeria and 143rd varsity in the country.

Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Chairman of the NUC conveyed the recognition of the university in a letter to Imo’s Gov. Hope Uzodimma in Abuja on Wednesday.

This is contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, in Owerri on Wednesday.

According to Nwachuku, the brief handover took place at the Abuja NUC headquarters.

He said that the NUC boss used the opportunity to laud Uzodimma’s commitment to the pursuit of quality education in Imo.

He added that the governor had shown much commitment towards the educational development and human capital development of Imo people.

Prof. Rasheed noted that the varsity would add to the efforts of the government to meet the human capital needs of Imo.

“With effect from Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, Kingsley Mbadiwe University, Ogboko, is formally recognised as the 42nd state-owned university and the 143rd University in the Nigerian university system,’’ Rasheed said.

Responding, Uzodimma thanked the NUC for granting the approval and promised that the state government would ensure that the university met the standards set by it.
