The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday welcomed 5,000 new members in Abia State, just a week after former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi joined the party.
Leading the mass defection was Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Accord Party, who returned to his country home in Umuaku, Ntigha, Isiala Ngwa North LGA. Hundreds of his supporters followed him into the ADC, leaving their former political parties and structures, including the South East Mandate for Good Governance.
Speaking at the event, Nwankpa said his decision to join the ADC was based on strong personal conviction. He explained that the party’s manifesto closely aligns with his political philosophy, which emphasises people-oriented governance, social justice, and sustainable development.
“The ADC is a credible and progressive platform capable of driving inclusive and people-centred governance that Nigerians truly desire,” Nwankpa said. “It offers a fresh opportunity to rebuild public trust in politics.”
The former Accord Party governorship candidate and his supporters were formally received into the ADC by Abia State Chairman Don Norman Obinna. The chairman praised the move, noting that the country’s political direction is increasingly leaning towards the ADC.
This development highlights the growing influence of Peter Obi’s political movement, as his recent switch to the ADC continues to inspire large-scale defections across the country.
