The Ireland Minister for Agriculture, Food, Marine and Defence, Mr Simon Coveney has applauded the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for its huge investment in technology, saying such practice could enhance its operations and modernisation programmes.
The Minister stated this while on a courtesy visit to the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi at the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja.
In a press release by Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC, the Minister who was accompanied by the Ambassador of Republic of Ireland to Nigeria, Mr Sean Hoy, commended the FRSC for not only embracing, but sustaining the use of technology in its management of traffic, noting that the practice was what the Corps needed to achieve its goal of making the roads safer in this era of massive motorisation. He particularly commended the FRSC for embracing the programmes of International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) through which about two thousand staff of the Corps have been trained and certified.
Mr Sean Hoy further stated that the certificates awarded by the ICDL are recognised globally, noting that with sustained efforts, all staff of the FRSC could equally benefit from the training programme and be certified for enhanced system management. He pledged to support the Corps’ drive for computerisation.
In his remarks at the occasion, the Chairman of E-Tech (Nigeria), Abdulkareem Uthman Mustapha commended Oyeyemi for sustaining the training programme which the FRSC embraced some years back, saying FRSC has by that practice distinguished itself as a reputable public institution with leadership that believes in international best practice. According to him, with the change of leadership in the Corps last year, many people had thought that the ICDL programme would die naturally in the Corps, but that they were pleasantly surprised that the succeeding leadership was prepared to take the programme to even greater heights without prompting, saying it indicates that the FRSC believes in quality management system.
In his own remarks, the Ireland Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Sean Hoy, who expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment shown by the leadership and staff of the FRSC to issues of technology especially the adoption of ICDL programmes promised that his country would collaborate with the FRSC in areas of mutual interests.
Highlights of the visit were the presentation of the 2014 BEST PRACTICES AWARD to the FRSC by the Chairman of E-Tech (Nigeria) Mr Abdulkareem Mustapha and presentation of certificates to some of the staff who participated in the last International Computer Driver’s Licence programme.
The Minister was accompanied on the visit by some top ranking officials of his Ministry as well as staff of the Embassy of Republic of Ireland in Nigeria.
