In an electrifying international friendly clash at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, the Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged victorious over the 10-man Black Stars of Ghana with a 2-1 win on Friday night.
Under the interim leadership of head coach, Finidi George, the Super Eagles displayed a strategic 3-5-2 formation, featuring Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers in the attack, edging out Sadiq Umar. Notably, debutant Benjamin Tanimu made his first appearance, while Calvin Bassey awaited his chance among the substitutes.
Wilfred Ndidi, the Leicester City midfielder, marked his return to the squad as captain, having missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, lending experience and leadership to the Nigerian side.
From the onset, Nigeria dominated proceedings, thwarting the Black Stars’ advances, although Dessers and Iheanacho struggled to convert several promising opportunities.
The Super Eagles surged ahead in the 35th minute when Dessers confidently dispatched a penalty kick after a Ghanaian defender handled the ball inside the box, marking his second goal for the three-time African champions.
Ghana’s hopes dwindled further when they were reduced to 10 men just before the hour mark. Nigeria intensified their offensive prowess, and substitute Ademola Lookman capitalized on a splendid assist from Alex Iwobi to net the second goal seven minutes from time.
In a last-ditch effort, Ghana earned a penalty in stoppage time following a challenge by Bright Osayi-Samuel on Antoine Semenyo. Jordan Ayew successfully converted the penalty, narrowing the deficit.
Looking ahead, Nigeria is set to lock horns with the Eagles of Mali in their next friendly encounter on Tuesday, aiming to sustain their winning momentum.
