Forty Eight hours after the kidnap of former Akwa Ibom legislator, Senator Nelson Efiong last Sunday, his whereabouts is still unknown.

This will be the Senator’s second journey to the kidnappers’ den as he was also kidnapped by hoodlums, after serving as speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly before becoming a Senator.

Though no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction of Senator Efiong, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as at press time, it was reliably gathered that, the Senator’s family, which is grief stricken is yet to be contacted by the kidnappers.

It is also not certain if his abduction has anything to do with the simmering political crisis in the state’s chapter of the APC.

A source who confided in this reporter said, the fact that he has remained incommunicado may be due to the fact that he was abducted without his phones.

“I understand that, there is no link between the family and the kidnappers forty eight hours after the Senator’s kidnap, because they whisked him away without his phones,” the source stated.

One of the victims of the attack (names withheld), who sustained serious bullet wound injuries, told this reporter from the hospital that, Doctors have successfully extracted bullets from his legs and that he was responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom Police Command has intensified the manhunt for the kidnappers with the aim of rescuing of the seized politician.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Odiko MacDon had said, the Command has extended drag nets within and outside their environs to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

He was quoted to have said, “Akwa Ibom State Police Command has received a report of the kidnap of the immediate past Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Nelson Efiong.

“The Command has received that information. And the CP has ordered an investigation into the matter. I believe that in no distant time we will get more information on it. But as I speak, we have received that report and we are working to ensure he can be rescued”.

The police spokesman said, “the CP Amiengheme Andrew has upon receipt of the information about the senator’s abduction, ordered immediate discreet investigation to ensure his rescue.”
