Truck crushes six-year old in Jersey City; Residents slam Mayor Fulop

This past weekend, around Jersey City’s Hamilton Park, a six-year-old-boy was involved in a fatal road traffic accident. A car struck and killed the boy as he cycled with his father. A UPS truck hit the young citizen at an intersection in tragic fashion. This led to management involvement and immediate police investigation. The terrible incident has shaken citizens of the city to their core. The child was announced dead on police arrival.

One of the fallouts of the tragedy was the outrage directed at Mayor Steven Fulop over his silence regarding the incident. As at the time of filing this story, he had yet to address the crisis in any capacity, much to the anger of citizens that feel as if their city is being run incompetently. This literal vote of no confidence is following Fulop’s loss in the primary election of the Democratic Party for the November 2025 governorship race for New Jersey, in which he finished third behind Mikie Sherrill and Mayor Ras Baraka.

Angry citizens have been defacing the Mayor’s posters in retaliation, with inscriptions such as “No More Dead Kids” being written on local “Vote for Fulop” signs.

“Fulop sends his kids to the same school as the child who was killed in this accident. Shame on him for staying silent,” one resident commented. There is widespread belief that his focus has been far too fixated on the election (which he has lost) as opposed to running the city properly, and this has reflected in tragedies such as the death of the six-year-old kid.

The accident is one of a plethora of similar incidents that have plagued the city in recent times. Citizens have come to begin to believe that the city practices poor road discipline. Many believe that more speed bump installations, traffic signs and lights, and general re-education of the city’s driving population is necessary for the safety of pedestrians. Also, many believe that re-allocation of street signals is long overdue. “I think we need dedicated green light[s] for pedestrians and vehicles turning left,” one citizen proposed, noting that Jersey City intersections are notorious for their complexity, as well as concurrent pedestrian-driver lights, which can often lead to confusion, accidents and collisions.

Residents who volunteered opinions insisted that the city’s complacency in street design is active malpractice.

Other potential solutions have been put forward, including narrower lanes, curb extensions, chicanes, and further detailed pavements. These changes, the respondents insist, will be effective in limiting driver comfortability, forcing them to focus on the road more and travel carefully. Curb extensions and chicanes would also limit speeding due to their shifts in direction, while textured or colored pavement will also alert drivers, all of which can protect pedestrians.

Pedestrian-friendly installations, including more pedestrian bridges, have also been brought up in conversations. “Revert back to … pedestrian bridge[s]. We have an explosion of traffic here in downtown as a singular result of this shortcut to the Holland Tunnel,” one user on the Jersey City subreddit pointed out. The consensus among citizens is that the city is too heavily predicated around supporting the driver and the traffic they endure, as opposed to the far less protected pedestrian in an already highly-walkable city.

Until traffic directing is re-purposed and pedestrian life is further valued, it’s safe to say that Jersey City walkers should proceed with caution, a concerned resident stressed.
