Bayern Munich and Arsenal have progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals following contrasting quarter-final second-leg encounters on Wednesday.
In Munich, Bayern edged out Real Madrid 4-3 in a pulsating contest to advance 6-4 on aggregate.
The visitors made a blistering start as Arda Güler found the net within the opening minute to draw Real Madrid level in the tie. Bayern responded swiftly, with Aleksandar Pavlović heading home from a set-piece to restore their advantage.
Güler grabbed his second of the night with a well-taken free-kick, but Bayern hit back again through Harry Kane, who continued his remarkable scoring run. Just before the interval, Kylian Mbappé struck to leave the tie evenly poised at 4-4 on aggregate.
With little separating both sides after the break, the game turned late on when Eduardo Camavinga was dismissed for a second booking, leaving Madrid a man down.
Bayern seized the moment, as Luis Díaz produced a superb finish in the closing minutes to put the hosts ahead. Michael Olise added another deep into stoppage time to confirm Bayern’s place in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile in England, Arsenal did just enough to see off Sporting CP after a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
The North London side progressed 1-0 on aggregate, courtesy of Kai Havertz’s stoppage-time goal in the first leg. Arsenal controlled proceedings in the return fixture and limited Sporting’s chances to secure qualification without much trouble.
It is another milestone for Arsenal, who have now reached the semi-finals in back-to-back seasons for the first time in their history.
Looking ahead, Arsenal will face Atlético Madrid, while Bayern Munich are set for a heavyweight clash against Paris Saint-Germain as the race for European glory intensifies.
