A lawmaker in Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Mathew Ugwueze (PDP-Igboeze South) on Thursday empowered 121 indigent people in Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu state.
Presenting the empowerment package at Ibeagwa-Aka, Headquarters of the local government, Ugwueze said that the gesture was to encourage indigent people live a better life and to support the provision of quality education to those who could not afford it.
The lawmaker, also the Chairman, Assembly Committee on Education, empowered 80 petty traders with N20, 000 each while 20 people were given a bundle of Zink, other roofing materials and N30, 000 each, to build a two room apartment.
“The beneficiaries were selected from the 16 wards in Igboeze South. The selected people are living in huts. This is to assist them to get two rooms of make-shift house.
“I will continue to provide them with continuous support until each of them owns a complete two rooms’ apartment,’’ he said.
The lawmaker also gave bursary award of N50, 000 each to 20 undergraduate students and N200, 000 to one post graduate student in the council area.
He explained that the gesture would be an annual event adding that only indigent people were targeted.
“This gesture was borne out of my humble background with a desire to affect the lives of the poor. I urge the beneficiaries to utilise the opportunity and in turn do same to others.
In his speech, the state governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi called on other legislators to embrace philanthropy as that was the only way governance could reach people living at the rural areas.
He commended Ugwueze for the initiative and encouraged him to keep up the gesture.
Subsequently, the member representing Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Dr Pat Asadu, said the people would continue to enjoy such gesture from their representatives both at the federal and state level.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Peace Ike expressed gratitude for the gesture describing it as the `first of its kind’ in the area.
“ Ugwueze has been empowering our people for a couple of years now but this is the best so far,” she said.
Ike urged other well-meaning public office holders to emulate his style of leadership and prayed God to prosper him.
Speaking, the Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, Dr Fidelis Odo said the people of the area had continued to enjoy effective representation from their representatives, as Ugwueze had utilised his position to enrich the people.
Also at the event were; the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, principal officers and other lawmakers, Chairman Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB), Mr Nestor Ezema and the Chairman, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Ikeje Asogwa.
