No fewer than 12,000 persons were on Monday presented with income generating items by the lawmaker representing Illela/Gwadabawa Federal constituency, Balarabe Salame.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker also distributed 24,000 clothing materials to victims of disaster and banditry in the area.

The items presented by the lawmaker included 200 sewing machines, 170 motorcycles and 38 tricycles, as well as three generators to the general hospitals in the constituency.

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State commended the lawmaker for the gesture and urged other political leaders to emulate.

“This is a rare gesture, despite the fact that we are not from the same political party, Salame saw the wisdom of inviting me to commission his constituency project.

“As such, I appeal to political actors in Sokoto state to eschew bitterness and join hands with the present administration for the benefit of the citizens,” he said.

Tambuwal added that he has no grouse against anybody and was ever ready to grace any occasion of similar nature by any politician, if invited.

“As Muslims, our political opponents should know that it’s only God that gives power to whom He so wishes.

“Therefore, I advise that we should take solace and wait for the next politicking period because we are not leading a political party, but the entire population.

“Moreover, in every election, there must be a winner and a loser, and the winner should be magnanimous while the loser should display sportsmanship tendency,” he added.

In his remarks, Salame, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Poverty Alleviation, said the gesture was part of his constituency project and federal government`s intervention for victims of disaster and banditry.

“We are motivated by the incessant calls by our spiritual leaders, who always preach to us to look back and assist the poor.

“I want to assure you that as your representative, I will continue to pursue more assistance to ease your economic hardship,” he said.

He thanked Gov. Tambuwal and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III for gracing the occasion.
