Immediate past President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has decried the rampant cases of violent crimes in the country just as he challenged all men of good will to rise up to the occasion to remedy the situation.
Senator Mark in a felicitation with Muslims and Nigerians alike on the Sallah celebration lamented the spate of crimes ranging from terrorism, kidnapping , armed robbery, vandalism and religious extremism that are fast destroying the fabrics of our society.
According to the former Senate President: ” Violent crimes are fast destroying our national landscape. The situation is alarming. This time calls for patriotism and service to rescue the situation.
“This is no longer an assignment for government alone. All hands must be on deck. It is not the case between Cain and Abel where one insists that I am not my brother’s keeper. In the the battle to save Nigeria, every one must be his brother’s keeper”.
To ameliorate the situation, Senator Mark urged governments at all levels to promote and uphold the sanctity of equity, fairness and justice to all as the peace and unity building process between and among Nigerians.
The greatness of the nation he stressed lies in the collective will of the people to promote unity , peace and development and not necessarily in the number.
He therefore implored religious leaders across the divide to continue to espouse the virtues of love, purity and forgiveness which the two major religions in the country preach.
The religions, Senator Mark added, should be the vanguards and champions of human dignity by promoting love, peaceful co existence , truth and justice in order to turn the despair to hope and sadness to joy.
Senator Mark was optimistic that Nigeria would be a better and more secure place for all “if we genuinely harness our potentials to work against the ills of the society.”
