Basiru, Wike trade words over Rivers State politics

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has described comments made by a party official about Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as unfortunate.

Basiru said the office of a governor must be respected, regardless of political differences. He criticised the reference to Fubara as a “so-called governor” and stressed that whoever occupies such a position deserves respect. He made the remarks in a Facebook post on Sunday, January 4, 2025.

In response, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, issued a strong warning, describing Rivers State as a “no-go area” for those he accused of interfering in its politics. He told the party leadership to stay away from the state and warned that anyone who ignored his advice could face consequences.

Wike said some people were making careless statements about Rivers State because of rumours of large funds in the state’s account. He warned against taking the state’s political support for the President for granted and urged caution in public comments.

Meanwhile, the Renewed Hope Ambassador for Rivers State, Desmond Akawor, said development had stalled in Oyigbo Local Government Area since Governor Fubara took office. He said the people of Oyigbo had expected meaningful development but had seen little progress.

Akawor added that apart from the appointment of a commissioner, Oyigbo had not benefited from government projects. He called for fairness in the distribution of state resources and insisted that Oyigbo should not be excluded from any allocation of funds meant for development.
