Morocco’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Moha Tagma, says Nigeria and Morocco share a long history of friendship, mutual respect, and growing cooperation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ambassador stated this in his welcome address at a reception to commemorate the Throne Day of the Kingdom of Morocco on Thursday night in Abuja.
Morocco celebrates July 30, the ascension date of King Mohammed VI to the throne, and the 2026 observance marks the 27th anniversary of the monarch’s reign.
According to Tagma, Morocco and Nigeria have strong bilateral ties, adding that the two countries are championing initiatives that promote the unity, peace and prosperity of Africa.
“From trade to culture, from security to agriculture, our partnership is destined to grow even stronger.
“As we celebrate Throne Day, we reaffirm Morocco’s commitment to continue working hand in hand with Nigeria.
“This is being realised under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency President Tinubu, to build a prosperous and integrated Africa,” he said.
Highlighting some historic milestones between the two countries, the Ambassador lauded the Nigeria-Morocco African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project.
“Just recently, in Freetown members of ECOWAS signed the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Nigeria-Morocco Africa Atlantic Gas Pipeline.
“This landmark project, initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016, and supported by His Excellency President Bola Tinubu, will be more than a pipeline.
“It will be a pipeline of prosperity, integration, and dignity for over 400 million people across 13 African countries,” he said.
According to him, for Morocco and Nigeria, this project embodies our shared vision: an Africa that is connected, resilient, and masters of its own destiny.
He emphasised that the AAGP would serve as the backbone for integration and the emergence of the Northwest African Atlantic region.
“And Just as the European Union was born from the sharing of coal and steel in 1952, the Northwest African Atlantic region will emerge through the sharing of energy and infrastructure.
“This is the first major project to unite so many countries; it will reshape the landscape of the West African coast and place the region at the heart of global energy geopolitics,” he said.
The Ambassador explained that the Throne Day was a day of national unity, renewed allegiance and reflection on achievements under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
According to him, the reception is to celebrate the continued health and prosperity of the monarch, and progress and prosperity of the Kingdom of Morocco.
He said the event was an opportunity to reflect on the enduring friendship between Morocco and Nigeria, and the future of Africa.
“Throne Day is not only a celebration of the Monarch, but a celebration of the Moroccan people, of our shared values of unity, progress, solidarity, and openness to Africa and to the world.
“Over the past 27 years, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has undergone a profound transformation.
“Economically, Morocco has positioned itself as a hub of stability, innovation, and sustainable development,” he said.
According to the Ambassador, Morocco has reaffirmed its African identity, adding that “Our motto is simple: The development of Africa by Africans, for Africans”.
He added that His Majesty King Mohammed VI has made South-South cooperation and African integration a strategic priority.
NAN reports that the reception was attended by stakeholders from different backgrounds, including government functionaries, captains of industry from both the private and public sectors and members of the diplomatic community.
