David Fizdale, Head Coach, D’Tigers
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has confirmed the appointment of David Fizdale as the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, as part of efforts to improve the country’s basketball standards and strengthen its position in international competitions.
The decision was approved by the federation’s Technical Committee and is seen as part of a wider plan to develop a stronger and more competitive basketball system in Nigeria.
According to the federation, Fizdale was chosen because of his vast experience in top-level basketball coaching and management. The American coach is respected for his work in player growth, leadership, team organisation, and game tactics during his time in the NBA.
The NBBF stated that the appointment shows its determination to improve the technical quality of the national teams while also helping Nigerian basketball talents at home and abroad reach their full potential.
NBBF President, Ahmadu Musa Kida, described the appointment as a major boost for the future of basketball in the country.
“David Fizdale represents the level of leadership, professionalism, and basketball knowledge that aligns with our vision for the future of Nigerian basketball,” Kida said.
“His experience, relationships, and understanding of the modern global game will be invaluable as we continue building a programme capable of competing with the very best in the world.”
Kida also explained that Fizdale’s responsibilities would go beyond handling the national team, adding that the federation expects him to support coaching development, player improvement, and the overall progress of basketball in Nigeria.
“Beyond the national team, we believe his presence will contribute significantly to player development, coaching education, and the continued growth of basketball in Nigeria. This is about building a sustainable future and creating an environment where Nigerian basketball can thrive globally for years to come,” he added.
Apart from leading D’Tigers in major international tournaments, Fizdale is also expected to help create better coaching systems and support the long-term development of basketball across the country.
