The exit of Boris Johnson. By Dr Eddie IROH

The tenure of Boris Johnson as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has come to an end.

The ouster of the man was on the cards this time around. But his end was predicted by the media amidst a crisis of ethics around Boris Johnson early in his administration three years ago.

In the end it was a fresh ethical crisis that brought Johnson crashing down. It was a typical Conservative sleaze that upended Boris Johnson: what did he know about the sexual escapades of his friend and Deputy Chief Whip Mr. Chris Pincher?

A relay of Ministers was trundled out on the morning talk shows to deny that the Prime Minster knew anything about Pincher. Those Ministers son had eggs on their faces when a retired senior Civil Service Lord MacDonald announced suddenly that a senior official of Number 10 Downing Street had told him that Prime Johnson had been fully briefed about the sexual indiscretion of Mr. Pincher.

With such disclosure from so high a source, Mr. Johnson’s goose was cooked. They disclosed that the Prime Minster had joked that the man was Pincher by nature and Pincher by name.

But with things falling apart, it was no surprise that Boris Johnson quit at noon yesterday. It is significant that in his resignation speech Johnson failed to acknowledge that his own lack of integrity has led to his downfall.

He blamed the herd instinct of his Conservative Party as driving him out! The prognosis was clear when two senior cabinet Secretaries for the Treasury Rishi Sunak, who was at one time seen as a Johnson successor, and his Health Secretary quit their jobs, and this was followed by 50 other Ministers out of office.

There were also various accusations of lying, an accusation unbecoming of the holder of the highest office in the land, and these repeated instances of lying led to an erosion of trust in the Prime Minister.

The question can’t stop bothering me as a man of African descent: Can any of these occurrences lead to the resignation of the head of government or his cabinet officials in Africa?

I leave readers to make up their minds.
