The Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has appealed to elected politicians to have the fear of God and serve humanity while in office.

Wamakko, who spoke Saturday at the Gidan Jaoji 003 poling unit during the Sokoto state local government election, also urged the electorate to demand accountability from their leaders.

While appreciating the electorate for the large turn out, Senator Wamakko said, “those that will eventually emerge winners must realize that they are elected to serve not to rule.

“Because the essence of leadership is to serve not to enrich themselves or build mansions. They should bear in mind that people have come out in large numbers to vote for them.

“And now, the task is for those elected to go and pay back by delivering dividends of democracy to their people. As elected leaders, we must serve diligently with the fear of God,” Wamakko pointed out.

Speaking earlier, Bello Bello, the Presiding Officer of 003 Gidan Jaoji where the Senator voted said voting
started at 8am in the morning and that the turn out was encouraging.

According to him, only four of the 15 participating political parties had agents at the poling unit.

On his part, Sokoto state governor Ahmed Aliyu, while at Magajin Rafi Primary school after voting, said the huge turn out was a further manifestation of the people’s believe in democracy.

Governor Ahmed who said he is in total support of local government autonomy, added that, it’s a good development in the political journey of Nigeria.

“As a true democrat, I know what it means for the local government to be truly financially independent and autonomous. And it is also part of my 9- Point Agenda during my electioneering campaign”.

Commenting on the local government election, Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission (SOSIEC) chairman, Suleiman Aliyu commended the conduct of the election saying they opted for manual process because of convenience.
