President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), on Monday formally assumed office as President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B, during a symbolic handover ceremony held at the WAFU headquarters in Cocody Rivera 4, Abidjan.
Gusau’s elevation comes in the wake of the election of former WAFU Zone B President and Ghana Football Association boss, Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, into the CAF Executive Committee at the CAF Congress in Cairo, Egypt, on March 12, 2025. Okraku has since been appointed CAF’s Second Vice President, paving the way for Gusau’s leadership at the regional level.
Arriving in the Ivorian capital fresh from the President Federation Cup final in Lagos – where Kwara United triumphed – Gusau was received with enthusiasm by WAFU Zone B officials and staff, marking the beginning of a new chapter for West African football.
In his remarks during the official handover, Gusau reaffirmed his commitment to transforming football across the region. “This is a moment of responsibility and opportunity,” he said. “We will focus on grassroots development, increase youth competitions, and deepen collaboration among our member associations.”
The NFF President emphasized his plans to attract private-sector partnerships to support infrastructure and talent development. “West Africa is home to some of the finest football talent on the continent. It’s time we build the structures and systems that will enable our young players to thrive, both locally and internationally,” he added.
Gusau’s appointment signals Nigeria’s return to the helm of WAFU Zone B leadership after over a decade, a move many analysts believe could inject new energy into football administration across the region.
With a strong record of football development in Nigeria and a vision anchored on unity, innovation, and investment, Gusau’s tenure is expected to shape the future of West African football and amplify the region’s voice within African and global football governance.
