AFCON 2025: Morocco start campaign with 2–0 win over Comoros

Atlas Lions players celebrating

Hosts Morocco made a winning start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a comfortable 2–0 victory over Comoros in the opening match of the tournament at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah on Sunday.

The first half ended goalless as Comoros defended well and frustrated the hosts. Morocco controlled possession but found it difficult to create clear chances before the break.

Morocco had an early chance to take the lead after Brahim Díaz was fouled in the penalty area. However, Soufiane Rahimi’s spot kick was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

The hosts continued to press and finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Noussair Mazraoui provided the assist for Brahim Díaz, who scored with a first-time finish to put Morocco ahead.

Morocco doubled their lead in the 74th minute through substitute Ayoub El Kaabi, who scored with an impressive bicycle kick to seal the victory and spark celebrations among the home fans.

The win gives Morocco maximum points and top spot in Group A after the first round of matches. The Atlas Lions will face Mali next on Friday, December 26, while Comoros will look to bounce back when they play Zambia on the same day.
