NUJ Akwa Ibom Correspondents’ Chapel supports N60,000 minimum wage

Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour & Productivity

Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Dennis Udoma has congratulated the President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Wabba Ayuba for demanding N60, 000 as minimum wage for Nigerian workers from the Federal Government.

Udoma, noted that in the face of the present economic recession, N18, 000 minimum wage is no longer realistic as it cannot afford basic necessity of life.

He added that, an average Nigerian worker, even the single ones, can survive on this amount for a week.

Udoma called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to prevail on the independent media owners to pay their employees promptly.

He said, some media organizations have not seen it as a duty to pay their employees, and many of them owe workers for more than two years.

While congratulating workers for this year’s May Day celebrations, Udoma also sought the support of the National Assembly to enact laws that will prevent media employers from engaging workers without payment.

According to him, this will help curb quackery and sanitize the  industry.
