Pep Guardiola leads Manchester City to UEFA Super Cup victory

Pep Guardiola tutored Manchester City defeated Sevilla 5-4 on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup after a keenly contested game on Wednesday August 16, 2023.

City have now added another trophy to their cabinet having already won the English Premier League, FA CUP and UEFA Champions League titles in the 2022/2023 season.

Pep Guardiola’s men came into the UEFA Super Cup as favourites but met a resilient opposition in Sevilla and so required a penalty shootout to get the win.

It was Sevilla who drew first blood, Youssef En-Nesyri leapt above Nathan Ake to meet Marcos Acuna’s cross and nod the Spanish La Liga side in front.

That goal saw them go into half-time with the lead but Manchester City responded early in the second half.

City equalised through Cole Palmer who scored with a fine header in the 63rd minute.

With scores at 1-1 at the expiration of regulation time, the match went to a penalty shootout where the Champions League winners were perfect.

Unlike their woeful outing at the English Community Shield, Manchester City scored all five before Nemanja Gudelj missed his spot kick and gifted them the trophy.
