Mr. Peter Obi, Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023, election, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the banks in the country to expedite efforts towards making the new redesigned currency available to Nigerians, especially small depositors and the unbanked in order to reduce the pains being experienced as a result of the scarcity of the new notes.

Mr. Obi, who said this in a tweet, stressed that it is important to make the new notes available to all Nigerians, “especially the underprivileged and those living far away from banks in the rural areas.”

The former Governor of Anambra State, who acknowledged that currency redesign is not peculiar to Nigeria and comes with some inconvenience and pain, however, pointed out that “it has significant long term economic and social benefits.”

Insisting that “there are improvements that can be made,” Mr. Obi urged “Nigerians to bear with the CBN and Federal Government with the hope that the general populace and Nigeria will harvest the gains that will come with the reforms.”
