Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno has called on the people of the state to unite irrespective of their party, ethnicity, and religion and work for the development of the state.

Shettima made the call, Thursday, when the people of Hawul local government paid him a ‘Thank You’ visit at the Government House, Maiduguri over the appointment of their son Alhaji Usman Mamman Durkwa as his deputy.

According to him, it is time for the people of Borno state to unite against their common enemies which are insurgency and poverty, as no any development will take place without peaceful coexistence.

The governor said Durkwa ‘was picked among several people that were seeking for the position, stressing that power belongs to God and He gives to who He want at any appointed time and people should forget about how Durkuwa emerges as deputy, as he was picked in Southern Borno and Biu Emirates and that deputy Governor can emerge in any of the local government that make up the emirate.’

“We work closely with Durkwa, as commissioners under former Governor Sheriff administration. He was also my commissioner, so I know him better. I believe we will not let the people of the state down.

“I believe Durkwa, will be a uniting force for all people of Borno state, as he was endorsed by all 7 emirs in southern Borno, all members of the state Assembly, members clubs and associations and party structure in the state,” Shettima stated.

Speaking earlier, leader of the delegation, member state House of Assembly representing Hawul constituency, Hon. Ayuba Steven Wakawa said they were in the Government House to thank the governor for appointing their son as his deputy.

Hon. Wakawa said the deputy governor has been a commissioner for 12 years and that he will use his wealth of experience towards the development of the state and Hawul local government, adding that plans have been concluded to rehabilitate the Biu-Yimirshika road and reconstruction of the Azare General Hospital.

In his remarks, the All Progressive Congress (APC), Vice Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Yerima thanked the governor for what he has done to the people of southern Borno and Hawul local government in particular, ‘especially for appointing Usman Mamman Durkwa as his deputy.’

Also speaking, an elder of the area, Alhaji Abba Habib, thanked the Governor for appointing Durkwa as his deputy, as he described him as ‘unifying factor not only for the people of Southern Borno but the state in general.’
