Ahead of the Saturday supplementary governorship election in Southern Ijaw, the Police has restricted the movements of persons, and boats fitted with two hundred (200) horse power engines.
This is as the Police Command said it has beefed up security in the state with increased foot, vehicular, waterways patrols and aerial surveillance in the state to curb politically motivated violence.
The command also warned members of all political parties and their contestants to desist from any act capable of disrupting the elections, advising them to abide by the peace accord they signed.
Police said restriction of movements commenced from Friday evening to Sunday between the hours of 7 am to 7pm.
The Command said any defaulter would be decisively dealt with, possibly arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
Spokesman of the command and Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP said any person or group of persons who violates this order will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
He also insisted that restriction of movement of persons, motor vehicles and tricycles will be enforced on the election date, in the entire state, from the hours of 6am to 6pm.
He said that “only those on essential duties will be allowed to move. The electorates in the affected areas are advised to come out and exercise their franchise by casting their votes for candidates of their choice.”
The PPRO said the Command in collaboration with other security agencies have synergized to create an enabling environment for the re-run elections in Southern Ijaw LGA and other affected polling units.
