Police personnel trained on human rights, conflict management in Sokoto

A group, ICON Associates, has, in Sokoto State, started a three-day training for Nigerian Police personnel on psychological development, human rights, rights of the Police as well as conflict management.

Flagging off the training at the Giginya Hotels Sokoto, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, represented by the Assistant Inspector General, Zone 10, Bello Dalijan said the training, sponsored by Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) couldn’t have come at a better time than now.

The IG, Usman Baba Alkali who affirmed that the goal is, amongst other things, part of the ongoing process of reforming the Nigeria Police to ensure good service delivery through enhanced capacity building, respect for rule of law and human rights in the face of current prevailing security challenges in the country.

“The psychological development and conflict management aspect is very key in improving the positive mindset of our police men in contact with the members of the public. This will create an avenue for our officers to exhibit high sense of tolerance and professionalism in decision making while engaging with the public and to effectively nip in the bud civil unrest and other disruptive tendencies which border on misconduct and other social vices,” he said.

While tasking participating officers from Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto States to endeavor to pass the training across to other officers and put into practice those things learnt in their day-to-day activities, the IGP assured Nigerians of the continued commitment of the Police to peace and security for all.

Speaking earlier, the convener and MD of ICON Associates, Mrs. Christie Dagogo George said the training became necessary in view of the security challenges in the country and its adverse effects on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.

Mrs. Dagogo stressed that the three-day training will improve the psychological stability of the personnel, aid their conflict management prowess and help them to re-understand the rights of citizens as stipulated in chapter four and section 33 of the 1999 constitution.

Continuing, Mrs. Dagogo said, the training will also, technically deploy demonstrations of technology for surveillance and other forms of monitoring and will get the trainees to observe and understand the classes of explosives and detonation of same.

On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Police Command, CP Muhammed Usiani Gumel appealed to participating personnel to concentrate, adding that the job of ensuring that Nigeria is secure and safe for all is a task that must be achieved against all odds.
