Ahmed Musa announces retirement from Super Eagles after 15 years

Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 15-year career with the Nigerian national team.

Musa made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement shared on his official X handle. He said the decision came after careful thought, adding that wearing the green and white jersey always meant everything to him.

He recalled starting his journey as a young player, receiving invitations to the U-20, U-23 and senior national teams at the same time. Despite his age and constant travelling, Musa said he never complained and always answered Nigeria’s call.

During his international career, Musa made 111 appearances to become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football. He won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and is Nigeria’s highest goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup, scoring memorable goals against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.

Musa said playing 111 matches for Nigeria was a great honour and stressed that he always understood the responsibility of wearing the national jersey. He described winning the 2013 AFCON as a special moment and said captaining the Super Eagles taught him important lessons about leadership, patience and selflessness.

He also thanked his teammates, coaches, backroom staff and football administrators for believing in him throughout his career. Musa expressed deep appreciation to Nigerian fans at home and abroad for their constant support.

Musa concluded by saying he gave his best to Nigeria and remains confident that the Super Eagles will continue to move forward, adding that his bond with the country will never be broken.
