President Buhari meets Okonjo-Iweala in New York; welcomes Trudeau’s re-election

President Buhari meets with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization in New York on 20th Sep 2021

As part of consultations towards his participation in the United Nations General Assembly 76 (UNGA76), President Muhammadu Buhari has met with Nigerian born Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in New York, United States.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was recently named among the TIME100, the 100 most influential persons of the year.

President Buhari arrived New York on Sunday, September 19, 2021 and is billed to address the General Assembly on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has congratulated Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, on his re-emergence after a hard fought snap election.

The President’s congratulatory message was conveyed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, on Tuesday in Abuja.

President Buhari said: “On behalf of my family, the government and people of Nigeria, I congratulate a true friend of Nigeria and Africa following his well-deserved re-election as Prime Minister.

“I look forward to working together to further strengthen the existing cordial bilateral relations.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Trudeau won a third term in Canada’s snap election.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party was elected in 158 of the 338 seats in the House of Commons, with 99 per cent of the polls reporting.

This is one more seat than he won in the last vote in 2019.

The main opposition Conservatives, under Erin O’Toole, won 119 seats, two fewer than last time.
