
Rivers United FC of Nigeria’s bus has been burgled and sprayed with as yet unidentified toxic chemicals in Tanzania less than 24 hours to the team’s CAF Confederation Cup second leg clash with Young Africans.
In a statement released by the Nigeria Premier Football League Champions, the sum of $5260 and other valuables were reportedly taken from the bus on Saturday evening after the team’s training session in Dar es Salaam.
The Rivers United FC statement, authorized by the media officer, Charles Mayuku, said: “Barely 24 hours to the kick-off of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation’s Cup quarter final 2nd leg tie in Dar es Salam, Rivers United’s team bus has been burgled and valuables worth thousands of dollars stolen.
“The Pride of Rivers, while completing their final training session ahead of the clash against Young Africans of Tanzania, noticed that their team’s bus had been broken into and sprayed with toxic chemicals and the sum of $5,250 is missing.
“On ground to witness the horrible incident are CAF General Coordinator, Ali Nwebe (Uganda) and CAF Head of Security, Jamil Bawalaggana Mpagi (Uganda) who have confirmed that a toxic chemical was sprayed in the bus.
“Rivers United have petitioned CAF as they await further action from the football ruling body, ” the Club’s statement concluded.
