Oshoala, Rinsola, Ihezuo fire Nigeria to dominant WAFCON start

The Super Falcons of Nigeria kicked off their bid for a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) title in style, sweeping past Tunisia 3-0 on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.

Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo were all on target in Nigeria’s Group C opener, showcasing the team’s attacking depth and reaffirming their status as favourites for the continental crown.

The breakthrough came early, as Oshoala opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a powerful header off Babajide’s pinpoint cross. It was a statement goal from Nigeria’s all-time top scorer and set the tempo for a one-sided first half.

Babajide, making her first appearance in a major tournament for the Super Falcons, was electric. After providing the opener, the C.A. Tenerife winger turned finisher just before halftime, firing past the Tunisian goalkeeper in the 45th minute to make it 2-0. She celebrated with Diogo Jota’s trademark gesture—a moving tribute to the late Liverpool star and his brother, André Silva, who both tragically passed away days earlier.

Nigeria continued to press in the second half, and their efforts were rewarded in the 80th minute when substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo latched onto a clever through-ball from Esther Okoronkwo and calmly slotted home the third.

The Super Falcons could have added more, with Ashleigh Plumptre testing the goalkeeper from range and seeing a first-half effort ruled out. But the damage had already been done by Nigeria’s ruthless finishers.
