Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a commanding performance to defeat Algeria 2–0 and book a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that also marked the end of Riyad Mahrez’s international African Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey.
The victory proved a painful farewell for Algeria’s captain Mahrez, who had hinted in his pre-match interview that the tournament would be his last Africa Cup of Nations appearance. The Al-Ahli winger cut a subdued figure as Nigeria outplayed the Fennecs on the night.
Victor Osimhen was the standout performer for Nigeria, silencing critics with a goal and an assist. The Super Eagles striker, who faced criticism for his conduct in the 4–0 quarter-final win over Mozambique, led by example with a dominant display.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 47th minute, rising highest to head home a fine cross from Bruno Onyemaechi. The goal was the first conceded in the tournament by Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
The Napoli forward then turned provider for Nigeria’s second goal. After collecting a defence-splitting pass from Alex Iwobi, Osimhen set up Akor Adams, who rounded the goalkeeper before calmly slotting into an empty net.
Nigeria defended resolutely in the closing stages to secure a deserved win and a semi-final date with tournament hosts Morocco.
The clash will be Nigeria’s first official tournament meeting with Morocco since January 27, 2004, when the Atlas Lions edged a 1–0 win at the AFCON. Morocco had earlier beaten Nigeria twice at the 1976 AFCON before lifting the trophy, while Nigeria gained revenge in the 1980 semi-finals on their way to a first continental title.
However, Nigeria’s record against host nations in AFCON knockout matches remains a concern. The Super Eagles have previously lost to Algeria in the 1990 final, Tunisia on penalties in the 2004 semi-finals, Ghana in the 2008 quarter-finals, and Côte d’Ivoire in the 2024 final.
They will now hope to change that history when they face Morocco for a place in the final.
