Super Eagles thrash Gabon 4–1 to stay in World Cup hunt

Super Eagles players celebrating

Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a dominant extra-time display to crush Gabon 4–1 on Thursday evening in Rabat, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.

The thrilling encounter at the Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay Al Hassan saw Nigeria dig deep after a tense opening period before finding their rhythm late in the game.

Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute with a cool finish after coming off the bench, but Gabon’s Mario Lemina equalised in the 88th minute to take the match into extra time.

Victor Osimhen could have sealed the victory in normal time but fired wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, the Napoli star redeemed himself in extra time.

Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with a precise effort early in extra time before Osimhen struck twice in quick succession to put the result beyond doubt and send the Super Eagles into the playoff final.

It was a statement performance from Eric Chelle’s men, who showed character and determination to bounce back from a frustrating week off the pitch. With the issue of unpaid allowances now settled, the players responded in the best way possible — with goals and unity on the field.

The win means Nigeria will now face the winner of the other semifinal on Sunday for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Osimhen’s brace, Ejuke’s sharp finish, and Adams’ crucial opener highlighted Nigeria’s attacking depth and renewed the nation’s confidence that the Super Eagles can soar once again on the world stage.
