Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Monday laid the foundation of a new office complex and laboratory of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in the state.

Tambuwal, while performing the function, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing the Director General of SON, Mr Faruk Salim, to reposition the organisation.

“I have the confidence that the new director general will do a lot in turning around the fortune of SON, considering his experience and knowledge,” he said.

According to the governor, the public, before now, only got to hear about SON without knowing how vital and important the organisation is.

“Therefore, with the current development, our people will fully benefit from the mandate of establishing the organisation to ensure preparation of standard.

“As such, we generally appreciate the new SON DG for choosing Sokoto state to deliver an important project that will uplift the standard of our state’s commercial activities,” he said.

Tambuwal further directed the state’s Commissioner for Lands and Housing and that for Commerce and Industry to arrange for the extension of the land purchased by SON.

This, he said, would enable the construction of the laboratory to be in the same location.

Earlier, the director general appreciated the generosity of the state government and the good people of Sokoto for their support in ensuring the fulfillment of the organisation’s mandate.

Salim reiterated the commitment of SON to best standards, the reason, he said, Sokoto state was chosen for the construction of the standard laboratory.

“The laboratory, which is the first in the northern part of the country, when completed, will be used in testing the standard of our products instead of taking such to Lagos,” he said.
